IN 2 EASY STEPS YOU CAN NOW CALCULATE AND OFFSET YOUR CO2 EMISSIONS!

HOW CARBON OFFSETS WORK

1) What is my Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 (a green house gas that causes global warming) for which you are personally responsible, in all areas of your life. This is a measure of direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation.

2) How can I find out what my own personal Carbon/CO2 Footprint is?

Carbonyatra's Calculator will help you measure your footprint while highlighting which areas of your lifestyle have the greatest effect on climate change and will provide you the means to help reduce your carbon impact.

3) What is a Carbon / CO2 Calculator?

A Carbon / CO2 calculator enables you to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide emitted as a result of your lifestyle. It is a useful tool to help you realise how your behaviour has a direct link to, and an impact on, climate change.

4) Why should I use Carbonyatra's Calculator?

Carbonyatra's Calculator has the following key attributes:

  • The data and calculations have been made according to the most stringent guidelines, in this case it is the UK DEFRA guidelines.
  • You can use the calculator to calculate an individual or household footprint
  • The critical areas of your lifestyle are brought together in one calculator- home energy and transport

    5) What areas of my life will you cover?

We all consume energy produced from carbon-rich fossil fuels to heat and light our homes and run our electrical appliances, and we use petrol and diesel made from fossil fuels to run our cars and travel by air. The calculator will take these direct CO2 emission producers into account.

As an individual you have a stronger influence over the emissions that you cause directly, so the CARBONyatra Calculator will only concentrate on direct emissions in this first phase.

    6) How accurate will the calculator be?

We have tried to design a tool that is relatively simple and quick to complete and not overly complex/onerous. In getting this balance of accuracy and completeness vs. simplicity and speed we have had to exclude certain impacts from this version of the calculator. Please keep in mind that the accuracy of the calculator is strictly a function of the accuracy of the information you provide.

Remember that this calculator is only an approximation of your annual emissions and is based on DEFRA emission limits released in 2007. This calculator and associated materials have been prepared from a variety of sources, and it is believed that the calculator provides a useful method for estimating CO2 emissions release.
